Synopsis

EN / In "The Wave" the archaeological gaze of the viewer is set in motion: a mass grave from the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) opens and closes itself. In 2011 Katrien Vermeire and Sarah Vanagt placed a camera above the spot where nine victims were buried after their execution by Franco’s supporters in June 1939. On day one of the excavation, a digging crane gently loosened the top layer of soil, until the archaeologists came across a skull with a bullet hole. Then the archaeologists continued their work by hand. The skeletons appeared, then disappeared, as if a strong wind blew that removed the sand and uncovered death, a primal truth.

FR / Dans "The Wave", le regard archéologique du spectateur est mis en mouvement : un charnier de la guerre civile espagnole (1936-39) s'ouvre et se referme. En 2011, Katrien Vermeire et Sarah Vanagt ont placé une caméra au-dessus de l'endroit où neuf victimes ont été enterrées après leur exécution par les partisans de Franco en juin 1939. Le premier jour de la fouille, une grue a doucement ameubli la couche supérieure du sol, jusqu'à ce que les archéologues trouvent un crâne troué par une balle. Puis les archéologues ont continué leur travail à la main. Les squelettes sont apparus, puis ont disparu, comme si un vent fort avait soufflé ce sable et découvert la mort, une vérité primitive.
