Synopsis

EN / Frans Masereel is one of the most fascinating Belgian artists of the 20th century. His work, essentially composed of black and white engravings, is a cry of rebellion against the tragedies of his time.

Forced into exile for his pacifist convictions, he embodied - alongside writers like Stefan Zweig and Romain Rolland - the dream of a cultural and brotherly Europe.

Through an imaginary correspondence addressed to the artist, the film sketches the portrait of a man who, throughout his life, attempted to break free of art dealers and put his creations in the hands of all.

FR / Frans Masereel est l’une des figures artistiques belges les plus passionnantes du 20ème siècle. Son œuvre, essentiellement composée de gravures en noir et blanc, est un cri de révolte contre les tragédies de son temps.

Contraint à un exil forcé en raison de ses convictions pacifistes, il incarna aux côtés d’écrivains comme Stefan Zweig et Romain Rolland, le rêve d’une Europe culturelle et fraternelle.

A travers une correspondance imaginaire adressée à l’artiste, le film esquisse le portrait d’un homme libre qui, sa vie durant, tenta de s’affranchir des marchands d’Art pour mettre sa création entre toutes les mains.
